**What a honeypot does well – and where it stops**
The idea is elegant. The plugin adds a field no human can see. A bot that fills every field it finds also fills the invisible one, and the submission is dropped. Nothing to solve, nothing to load, nothing your visitors notice. On top of that, a honeypot makes no external requests at all, which is a genuine advantage for privacy-sensitive sites.
The ceiling is structural, not a matter of tuning:
- A bot that skips hidden fields passes. Modern spam software checks whether a field is visible before filling it. Once your site is worth targeting, this is the software that shows up.
- Human spam passes completely. Someone paid to type submissions by hand fills the form the way a customer would. There is no hidden field for them to trip over.
- The plugin has no memory of the sender. It cannot know that this email address subscribed to 400 other sites this week, or that this IP has been posting spam for months, because it only sees one form on one site.
- Nothing is filtered before the request reaches your server. Every bot still loads your pages and consumes resources.
